Blueberry Branch

I did a Blueberry painting earlier and wanted to try another one with just the berries. Painting the berries was lot of work. I wanted to try out a different background. My end result for the background is not what I envisioned in my mind. But still pretty happy with the original painting!

Aloe 2022

On Memorial day weekend, I had a chance to participate in Artist Demos at Chemer's Gallery in Tustin. It is a tradition that after HeART of Orange County juried show ends, artists are invited to do demos on the closing day of the show. I was happy to be juried in and also to participate in Artist Demo. It is a great day to interact with other artists and watch their process of creating art. I chose a simple image of Aloe that I had bookmarked for painting long time back. Below is the final painting that came out! Greens were quite challenging. But I love how the painting came out.

Camille Pissarro Rose

This was my experimental piece where I wanted to try out painting outside of the box. Below in the picture, I placed a red matt behind the painting to see how it looks. The paper itself is 8x10 inches.
I am not quite happy with the background, I may tweak it a bit later.
The rose is from my own reference picture and this grows in my front yard. I will definitely paint this Rose again when it blooms in spring time.

Yin Yang - Calla Lily

Yin Yang - Calla Lily - Created 9/13/2020

I was in search of painting something white in watercolors. Not sure if you know but painting white in watercolor can be challenging. This is because actual white color is not used. The white that you see in the painting is the white surface of the paper. So its mostly the negative painting technique used for painting the flower itself. The Calla Lily was perfect to paint and I found plants in our neighborhood - awesome reference pictures!!

New Life

Red Rose from my back yard. I was inspired to paint this after getting the good news and seeing the photo of a good friend who delivered a baby boy! The Read Rose is for a vibrant new mom and the bud is the new baby.

Orange Rose

I love Roses and after finishing up the previous Yellow Rose, I set out to create a series of Roses - all on 8x10 inches size. So I chose Orange, which is the color of Energy, Joy and Creativity. Hopefully I will continue with my series further with different color Roses... Lets see how many I could do this year...

Yellow Rose

Not sure what inspired me to pick yellow rose photo reference.. Just wanted to do a smaller size painting. Also I have been painting lots of pink color, just wanted a break from it. This is also a rose from my backyard and in this super bloom season, there is inspiration all over!
I decided to do it in the Chemer's Gallery Artist Demo. When I started there, I felt that I had painted the shadows too dark or what! The yellow started turning into green since I had a blue underpainting for shadow. Anyways, after coming home, I was able to fix some shadows and added more yellow pigment to make the yellow stronger!
I like how it came out finally!!

Dog Portrait - Biscuit - SOLD

It was such a delight to paint this commission painting!! It is a different subject for me and I decided to do in Watercolor. I was sent a picture of this cute dog standing in grass. I have done the grass and florals quite a bit. Doing a "white" dog felt like a challenge first. But as the painting progressed I realized I was having fun to create the fur effects on this dog!!
The owner will be gifting this painting to his daughter as a Christmas Gift. What a great idea, I am sure she will cherish this painting for long time to come!!

Ready to Pick Guava

Guava is one of my favorite fruit. Back in childhood I spent many hours climbing on guava tree and sitting on the tree until I felt full with the Guavas. This painting brings back those memories...
This is painted from a picture I took of a ripe Guava from my backyard tree. In So Cal its a blessing to have Guava tree at home. The picture was taken couple years ago and finally I took it up for painting it.
I started painting this as part of the Artist Demonstration in Chemer's gallery on May 6th and finished it after coming back home.
I have been doing more watercolors lately so definitely felt good getting back to oil to change it up.

My First Poinsettia - SOLD

I haven't posted since August!! Didn't realize that it was so long.. For a while I was busy sharpening my sketching skills. Then for about a month, I was training for the Century miles bicycly ride to San Diego. Then after that, just about a month focused more on the Kathak Dance recital coming up.

Now finally back to my studio and in the spirit of Christmas, pulled out a Poinsettia photo reference to paint. The first couple days I found it hard to sit, but quickly got into the flow as I was about half way there. Loved doing the light effects and how each leaf unfolded. I feel each leaf has its own dance and yet they all stand together as if in a dance pose !!

Meal Preparations - SOLD

Thank God it is Leap Year and I managed to do at least one post on the last day of Feb. 2016!!
I have been working on this for sometime on and off.. This is a custom painting requested by a client. She gave me few pictures to select from. I picked one and talked to her about the changes/color scheme she wants in the actual painting. At the end of our discussion on the painting, we decided to split the picture to 2 paintings. I showed it to her in the initial stages and towards the end. Incorporated couple more changes and made it final today!! I am happy that she likes it! This is called a dyptich painting - it can be hung together the way below or hung separate.

Stuffed Animal in Sun

As plein air (i.e painting outdoors from direct observation) practice, I placed a big stuffed toy animal on a chair in our backyard. Positioned it to get some interesting light on it and originally had placed a trash can on the side instead of the bush. After about 3 hours the painting was not complete but light and shadows had changed drastically, so I had to stop. In my studio finished the stuffed animal, but the trash can was looking rather odd. So instead I converted it into a bush with pink flowers following the same light and shadow pattern as it was on the trash can. Looks good to me now!!
How do you like it?

Coconut Halves

Here is the demo painting I completed on the day of Ganapati Festival in LA. It took me 2 hours to paint this, while I was painting there were people watching as they were passing by, few stopped to talk. But there was a very curious little girl who stopped with her Dad and brother and watched for sometime. Eventually she asked me questions and it was fun chatting with them during the demo.

Perfect Coconut Split

This painting was created as a practice for doing Live Demonstration during the Ganesh Festival in Los Angeles. A week prior to the actual demo, I set up this still life in my back yard. It was fun to paint, standing in the shade. I chose to paint coconut because that is what I had on hand for preparing the sweet offering "modak" - a favorite of Ganesha.

For the 2014 Fall Art Show, I prepared 2 demo paintings. I chose pumpkin for demo - what could be a better subject for painting in Fall season !? A work in progress painting for both pumpkins are in separate blog posts.
They are put together below, but each one is a separate painting or can be framed together as a collage as it is shown below:

In the Woods - SOLD

Here is one more water color magic experiment. I used lot of salt and alcohol for the texture in the background.
As I walked, each step was making sound - krrrr.. krrr... krrr... due to the dried leaves that had fallen on the ground. And looking up, the sky was lit with colors. Enjoyed the hike throughly!!

Now I am itching to do oil paint, have been away from it for quite a while...

Glowing Branch - SOLD

I love to try out different mediums. Here is my latest, experimenting with Watercolors. I find watercolors a magical medium. This time I tried out spraying water on the painting to create the background effects. If the painting is too wet, then the water spraying did not work quite well. I darkened the background colors once again, waited for it to dry a little. You can tell how much a painting has dried by looking at it in at an angle and observing how much it shines. The shimmer is quite less as it dries. This is a perfect time to gently spray water and it creates magical texture on paper. Had fun with this piece. Hope you like it!
