Day 4 - 30 in 30 Challenge Jan 2015 - Green Bell Pepper - SOLD

I had decided to paint Green Bell Pepper. But needed to change the background colors. Looked up Google, and I came across different color schemes. I decided to experiment with the triad color scheme, explained at the end of this post. First take a look at my Green Bell Pepper.

How are you enjoying my paintings so far?
Here's about the triad color scheme: By definition - "A triadic color scheme uses colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel". Triadic color harmonies tend to be quite vibrant. To use a triadic harmony successfully, the colors should be carefully balanced - let one color dominate and use the two others for accent.
I used the Green, Purple and Orange colors; Green being the dominant color.
I am happy with the results of this experiment, the painting did turn out to be very vibrant!!

Day 3 - 30 in 30 Challenge Jan 2015 - Backlit Tomato Slice

Today I was out whole day, went to Griffith Observatory in LA and then Olvera Street in downtown LA. So I was very tired by the end of the day. But I made a point to paint for day 3 otherwise I would get behind in the very beginning. Besides tomorrow is Saturday, so I can take rest.
I always had thought of painting a tomato slice with light from behind. This is what I got - not sure if I am very happy with it, but will see tomorrow with fresh eyes!!

Day 2 - 30 in 30 Challenge Jan 2015 - Half Plum Reflection

On Day 2 I felt like doing a plum to change up the colors and to make it interesting, I cut it in half for painting. for adding more interest, I put glass under the plum to get reflection.

Painting is all about keen observation. Notice the dark shadow area under the plum. Normally if it was not glass under it, the shadow would have been darkest right under the fruit and then lighter downwards, But since there is glass under it, right under the fruit, shadow is light. Plus the edges of glass need to be painted quite differently.

Day 1 - 30 in 30 Challenge Jan 2015 - Satsuma Tangerine - SOLD

Happy New Year to all!
January 2015 Day 1 painting challenge is starting with a dose of vitamin C. This is a Satsuma Tangerine. Living in Southern California we are blessed with a variety of fruits and vegetables, which is my theme for the Jan 2015 Challenge. Yesterday I went to the produce store, I found 3 different kinds of Oranges (in the peak season there could be up to 7 varieties of oranges). I love this variety since it can be peeled very well and the taste is refreshing to eat.

Tomato - SOLD

Here is a trial run for the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge starting in January, This is the third time I will be doing this challenge with a group of 300+ artists all around the world. Feels incredible to be part of it and everytime I do it, I have gotten better in my technique.
This time I have decided to stick to 6 x 6 inches, small canvas board. The theme is going to be fruits and vegetables. I will challenge myself with different colors, slices and wedges as I go along.
For the trial run, I did a backlit Tomato. The trial run was to get an estimate on the approx time I will need to allocate for this exercise. It took me 2 hours to do this, which means I should set aside that much time daily.
Lighting makes a lot of difference when viewing the painting. The first version of picture is taken under normal daylight in a shadow area. The second version is under studio light - both warm and cool light being used when I paint.

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer - SOLD

Inspired by Christmas decoration and lighting in the garden, I felt like doing this lighted Reindeer. There is a lane in our neighborhood that does lots of christmas decorations and lighting. Its a very lively street and many people from far away neighborhoods come to visit here during christmas time. I took lots of pictures and when I was looking at pictures to paint, this red nosed reindeer captured my attention.
